Design Brief
The idea behind this project was to create a book cover for Penguin Books new launch called, Famous Couples. Based on research about the Penguin Books brand, create a book series that resembled the Penguin Books “house style”, using only black, white, and the “Penguin orange”. I was required to choose a couple (fictional or non-fictional), conduct research about the couple's connection and relationship. Then I was tasked to create a book design that represented the characters relationship without directly showing the couple as a representational image. The challenge was to represent the characters in a visually metaphorical way.
Solution
For this Famous Couples book launch, I chose Shrek and Fiona as the couple because of how vibrant their personalities are and how unique their love story is. The challenge with this project was that the couple had to be represented in a visually metaphorical way and also designed using a minimal color palette of black, white, and orange. To achieve this challenge I wrote out key attributes for each character. After referencing the list I chose to represent Shrek as an onion resembling his ogre personality and Fiona as a crown/diamond resembling her princess qualities and overall beauty. Both the character designs are simple yet effective in metaphorically representing the couple. Both character symbols are fairly recognizable objects making them representational of the characters in the simple black, white, and orange color palette.
