Project Brief
This was a two part project, which included finding a current issue based campaign and then creating a visual identity that would lead the campaign. The issue for the campaign was chosen based on a current news article from that time. After research about the issue, the first part of the project was to create a large format campaign poster that should help bring awareness to the campaign.
The goal of the second part of the 2 part project was to create an informational brochure regarding the current issue. The objective of the brochure was to act as an action/information resource guide to support the campaign. The guide should be two-sided and have a finished size of 5.5” x 17”. The format is a two-sided 4 panel (8 total) multi-fold brochure, printed, cropped, and folded. I had to determine how the guide was going to serve a purpose that is most appropriate for the topic and overall campaign needs. The guide serves as a booklet that better informs its audience on the working conditions of hospitals as well as explain how the audience can help the underlying issue. Through both parts of the campaign project, the goal was to design a cohesive campaign that successfully conveyed its message at first glance.
Solution
The challenge of this project was designing a conceptual image to represent the idea of how the state run hospital system is falling apart. The conceptual icon relates to the key positioning and messaging of the campaign. The icon created acts as a visual shorthand and is used as a logo for the campaign. The concept behind the campaign was how the working conditions that hospital staff undergo affects the quality of care that patients receive. I chose to use illustration to create a symbol for the campaign. The two main campaign illustrations represent how the state run hospital system is broken, but with support and awareness that comes along with the campaign, the state run hospital system can be fixed. I wanted the campaign to have a bold and to the point appearance to fit into the existing, clean and straightforward design world within the medical field. To connect this brochure to the existing campaign poster style, I chose to represent different ways people can help the hospital system through a bold, and chunky illustrative style. The illustrations are simple yet effective at demonstrating the various ways the hospital system can be improved. The illustrations do an effective job at showing how the hospital system is a cycle and it takes everyone a part of the system to help make a change. I chose to format the brochure in a simple, easy to read layout, matching similar styles of existing hospital posters and brochures I found during my initial research phase.
